Non-profit organization and processes (Challenges and solutions)

Engineers for a Sustainable World Conference, 30-Sep to 2-Oct 2004. Non-profits can come together through love and passion, often to address a specific social or community need. The mission can draw in a wide range of similar minded individuals and groups, but from very diverse backgrounds. This organic growth can lead to challenging operational and management issues for the non-profit. Without appropriate organization and business processes, the group’s effectiveness, growth and long-term viability can be greatly reduced. But management practices borrowed and adapted to the realities of the non-profit environment can make the organization’s chances of survival and positive impact much higher. In this talk, we will explore some of the challenges in organizing and running a non-profit and look at a number of organizational, management and business practices and how they can be successfully applied in a non-profit setting.
