Duxbury Reef Ecological Monitoring Program

Duxbury Reef a shale intertidal, reef system, within the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary is a rich and diverse marine community.
7Forward, together with researchers from the College of Marin are conducting intertidal surveys on transect sites established by the late Dr. Gordon Chan, of the College of Marin's Bolinas Marine Station.
Areas of focus include: Species richness and abundance, Human-system impact, earth-system studies, and oral natural history.
Surveys are also conducted by Marin county elementary students. In these studies students investigate the marine system of Duxbury Reef through a guided, inquiry-based process.

Mussels, Mytilus californianus and Goose Neck Barnacles, Pollicipes polymerus have been monitored in specific transects since the late 1950s. |

A Giant Green Anemone, Anthopleura xanthogrammica, named "Tony" was monitored by Dr. Chan and his students for over 35 years. This long time Duxbury resident still occupies the same pool where Dr. Chan studied "him". |
